Children of Methuselah

return to episode list

What was happening exactly in this episode was mildly confusing. I know this wasn’t the backup bridge, this was the training bridge, to which I’m not sure control could be transferred there. What it does seem like is, these kids would absolutely know how to get to the backup bridge from where they are and totally change the ship course. That makes this episode the biggest slap in the face thus far. It was also unexplained and basically pointless that the kids were psychic. Supposedly, they remain as kids forever, and just constantly train in flying the ship as a potential backup crew. Also unexplained as to why they are immortal. Is an aspect of their enviroment retarding their aging? Were they naturally born children that underwent a treatment to not age? Were they designed and grown in a lab? What?

There is a problem in that these kids think they are not in a practice bridge but flying the ship for real. How? Why? With everyone else that forgor, it is because it happened generationally. New generations forgor it was a ship, the feral hall monitors forgor because they are descendants of the first hall monitors. These kids came with the ship. They are generation 1, the cause of their forgor is unclear. Trauma of being abandoned + time? This all needed to be clearer. Are they permanently child like or are they old and wise in child bodies? It seems to flex from moment to moment in mid show. Basically, this was shit.

As always, this somehow results in no forward progress. Really? Whatever the deal with these kids is, they most certainly know how to fly the ship. Period. One would presume they know how to get around the ship. As a backup crew they really ought to know where the backup bridge is. Taking a kid with them might have been a good idea because that kid would be able to tell them where to go so they are not always randomly stumbling into dangerous themed habitation pods. Of course they can’t do this because continuity.
